My Morning Smoothie
I love love love pancakes like the next person but my go-to breakfast is my scrumptious blueberry smoothie with protein. It’s a perfect combination of produce, protein and healthy fats. It tastes like dessert to me!!
I’m on a holistic path and that means I avoid gluten which causes a list of issues including leaky gut, inflammation and thyroid issues. I also avoid eggs. Eggs can aggravate Epstein Barr which is a virus that lies dormant in anyone who’s ever had Mono.
I love smoothies because you can change it up a million ways. Sometimes I create variations but this little yummy is my fav!!
Let’s break it all down by these amazing ingredients! Feel free to scroll for the recipe!
BLUEBERRIES
Wild blueberries are not only delish but they have amazing benefits. Blueberries are high in antioxidants and fight inflammation in the body. They fight cancer and boost brain health. Wild blueberries are smaller and more dense than conventional and pack more of the benefits so I always recommend going with wild. I love going to Costco and they have big bags of frozen wild blueberries so check them out if you have a local Costco.
BANANAS
I am bananas about bananas!! They are packed with potassium which can alleviate muscle cramps. They can lower blood pressure and increase energy. Another cool benefit is the browner the banana the higher the TNF-tumor necrosis factor-a cytokine which helps prevent the growth and spread of tumors cells. For these reasons alone, everyone should add a banana to their smoothie!
SPINACH
“I’m strong to the finich cause I eats me spinach!” Ok call me old but I love Popeye and I love spinach! Spinach is high in iron, it reduces inflammation, boosts the immune system and prevents cardiovascular disease. Again I say! For these reasons you have to add spinach!!!
COCONUT MILK
HELLO!! I love coconut milk but you can use a nut milk if you prefer but the benefits of coconuts are valuable to your health. Coconuts provide a high source of medium chain fatty acids which reduce inflammation, improve brain health and can lower bad cholesterol. They can also improve thyroid function and digestion.
COLLAGEN
As we age we lose bone density as well as strength in our joints. Collagen is necessary for bone health as well as hair, skin and nails. Overall, Collagen is an anti-aging powerhouse and is great in any smoothie. I use plant-based collagen and love this one from Ora Organic.
PROTEIN
As far as protein powder, I have transitioned to plant-based protein. I really love this option from Ora Organics. I’m very picky when it comes to taste. You can also check out this one from JJ Virgin. If you aren’t familiar with JJ Virgin, she is a powerhouse when it comes to knowledge and her products are amazing!!
FLAX SEEDS
I add flax seeds to my smoothie daily. They are packed with Omega 3’s which lower inflammation and boost brain function. They also keep you regular, if you know what I mean! Flax seeds can also help regulate hormones for us post-menopausal women and reduce hot flashes and let me tell you, hot flashes are for the birds!!! Check out my favorite flax seeds here.
CINNAMON
Cinnamon is not only tasty and flavorful but it packs power in the anti-flammatory department. It can also help balance blood sugar which is huge!!! You can add cinnamon to any smoothie!! Check out my fav right here!
HIMALAYAN SEA SALT
Last but not least I always add a pinch of pink Himalayan Sea Salt. Sea salt is powerful for the adrenals and is packed with over 80 trace minerals. It helps balance pH and electrolytes. It supports thyroid function and improves circulation. For those of us with low blood pressure it can help safely improve it but be sure to check with your doctor and monitor your BP. Check out my favorite Himalayan salt here.
